Supply Chain Case Study

Commitment to Quality and Responsiveness

Manufacture precision aluminum banks designed to house power-dense, high-reliability capacitors for a leading aerospace company.

Overview

Trico Machine was contracted by a leading aerospace customer to manufacture precision aluminum banks designed to house power-dense, high-reliability capacitors. These components are engineered for mission-critical environments across the defense, energy, and aerospace sectors, specifically supporting DC energy storage, high-energy pulse lasers, and high-power microwave systems. To ensure operational success, these products must strictly adhere to MIL-STD-704 and DO-160 requirements, necessitating high-tolerance machining and specialized coatings under MIL-STD-8625.

The Challenge

During a standard quality control check, Trico Machine identified a significant issue with the external supply chain. A specialized coatings vendor delivered a batch of chemical film coatings (MIL-STD-8625 Type II gold anodized) that, while technically meeting some specifications, exhibited visible runs and streaks. This non-conforming finish threatened the quality, functional, and aesthetic standards required for the customer's mission-critical deployment.

Trico's Rsponsive Solution

Trico immediately activated a comprehensive quality recovery process, prioritizing transparency and direct accountability. Rather than allowing the burden to fall on the customer, Trico took full ownership of the resolution:

1. Customer Transparency: Trico proactively alerted the customer as soon as the defect was discovered. Management met with the customer to demonstrate active oversight, ensuring they felt secure in Trico's commitment to quality. The communication emphasized that Trico's internal QA process had successfully caught the error and would manage the vendor directly to ensure future compliance.
2. Vendor Accountability: Trico initiated a "QA Flash" to the vendor, providing photographic evidence and highlighting specific contractual MIL-STD requirements. Trico returned the entire lot and established a rigorous corrective action plan, including scheduled progress calls and mandatory in-person inspections before any further shipping.

Outcome

By handling the supply chain disruption with transparency, a plan, and accountability, Trico Machine strengthened its partnership with the aerospace customer and vendor. The interaction led to a permanent improvement in Trico’s procurement standards. Trico developed a new coating inspection process that includes: language in all quotes highlighting the "streak-free" and "run-free" requirements of MIL-STD finishes; and, the use of physical color swatches to eliminate ambiguity in vendor expectations. Ultimately, Trico demonstrated that responsiveness and proactive communication with customers and vendors are as vital to mission-critical standards as the machining itself.
