Most cartoonists use plain everyday ordinary No. 2 pencils to produce their cartoons just like the one above. It’s also known as an HB lead when it comes in a fancy tray of art pencils. They are both, the HB and No. 2, pretty much the same thing. It gives a nice soft line and is easy to erase. |

However, I only use one kind of pencil and that’s the Non-Photo blue pencil! I sometimes switch between the 740 ½ sky blue pencil made by Berol to a true non-photo blue pencil from various manufacturers. I find the Non-Photo blue to have a nice lead quality. It’s soft enough to sketch with , but also firm enough to make some stronger lines. The Non-photo blue’s main advantage is its ability to become invisible when scanned or photographed. So, I get the best of both worlds. Nice smooth pencil lines and I don’t have to spend endless hours erasing those pencil lines!. |

But on the occasion that I am drawing with an HB or No. 2 pencil, I usually use one of these Pentel Click Erasers. They’re sleek and portable and do a nice job erasing pencil lines. And having them shaped like a pen gives you a bit more control. |
