Art Sansom was a good friend who freely gave me many a cartooning tip. I made a habit of visiting him at his home studio almost every Saturday afternoon. And Art would always pull the door wide open and warmly welcome me. Once there, he took the time to critique my work, point out its strengths and weaknesses and gave me a lot of encouragement. “You keep at it!”, he’d always say to me as I was leaving with my latest batch of comic strips. And it was his encouragement that kept me drawing, developing and submitting cartoons and comic strips. But he gave me much more than encouragement. He gave me professional instruction. He told me what kind of pen and pencil to use. He told me the kind of paper I should use. He showed me how to layout the artwork and how to set-up a lettering guide. In short, Art Sansom gave me the right tools and a foundation. He showed me how to create cartoons in a professional manner. Many of Art’s suggestions, tips and tricks, I’m passing on to you on this disk. The only difference is, I’ve reworked some of these techniques to be applicable to that new cartooning tool, the computer. So, if you have anyone to thank for this information, it’s not so much me as it’s Art Sansom. |
